Unfortunately for presenting both sides of the debate, these facts have never - or seldom - been publicized. It is supposedly all about the selfish, stupid elders making the wrong decision (wrong for who) - never mind that MAYBE they are looking what is happening to Britain and not liking it one bit for all the right reasons. The priviliged chattering clases have had the media sewn up and ignored or denigrated the laboring classes and the poor who did see much more immigration that what was officially reported and did see the job loses and the money spent on health, housing and welfare - which came out of the worker's pockets. The workers are also the ones facing competition from people who are willing to work for far lower wages and benefits - which might be made up by benefits that the "immigrants" are entitled according to UK law but which the native born can't get. I don't know but I suspect that those who voted to leave live in a different reality that the rich and the privileged and that they are not all stupid bigots.
ReplyDeleteIronically, the very people who experienced life in Britain before the EU and after, voted Leave in overwhelming numbers, and no one suggests maybe they have a point...while the very young and most inexperienced voted to preserve the status quo - and give all appearance of being absolutely terrified of standing on their own feet and to weld their own destiny...
ReplyDeleteYour headline of "fear...." is right on. They seem paralyzed with terror and I wonder what happened to a bit of back bone much less common sense. Britain is not going to be isolated by some impassable wall; there will be trade agreements, people coming and going, etc. I expect that the Germans, in particular, will be vindictive as they can be - getting even for losing two wars - but other wise, things will settle down to life as usual. Furthermore, Britain has more trade with Commonwealth members, including India, than she does with EU countries. Not everybody in Europe is in the EU; both Norway and Switzerland are not and they are doing just fine.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if those who voted to stay really looked at the possibility of their ports being swamped by the thousands of mostly male migrants from African and the Middle East which is happening all over Europe. That could easily happen if the EU continued to force countries to open their borders - and many EU countries which had endured Muslim rule for centuries are refusing. All this talk about how horrible it is to be "anti-immigrant" is setting up another scapegoat. Why shouldn't a country and a people be very very concerned about the violence, bigotry, sexism and lack of usable skills that the current crop of migrants are bringing with them.
I also read that the youth, who are all anti-stay, did not turn out in large numbers. Guess they could not tear themselves away from their cell phones and electric gizmos.
